Every April, the world unites to celebrate Earth Month, a time of year that fills us with hope and a passion to protect the planet we call home. This special occasion is dedicated to raising awareness and consciousness about environmental issues, and people from all walks of life come together to take action. From companies fundraising for environmental organizations to schools teaching their students about sustainability, there are so many ways to make a difference. Individuals also take this opportunity to adopt eco-friendly habits into their daily routines, and together, we can create a better future for our planet.
At Peko, sustainability and waste reduction are at the heart of our mission, and we're proud of our accomplishments. Since our inception, we have diverted over 200,000 pounds of food from landfills, resulting in a reduction of almost 500,000 pounds of CO2 emissions. This is equivalent to driving a gas-powered car around the Earth 21 times! Our customers and partners have played a vital role in our success, and we are constantly inspired to do more.
We are thrilled to announce our ongoing efforts to reduce our environmental impact:
- As of February 20, 2023, all of our deliveries are officially carbon-neutral, thanks to Fresh Prep's Onfleet Offset Program.
- From April 30, 2023, we will be using reusable tote bags for deliveries, and customers can return them the following week. We are also launching a recycling program for soft plastics in our produce boxes, making it easier for customers to recycle materials that are sometimes unavoidable in the pursuit of reducing food waste.
- Additionally, we are working towards securing B Corporation Certification, which will ensure that we meet the highest standards of verified social and environmental performance, public transparency, and legal accountability.
